Harvey Update Monday 9:00 am
Staff from the City and multiple agencies and departments continue to respond to the situation caused by flooding from Hurricane Harvey. The area has received 16.77 inches of rain in the 24-hour period which ended Sunday at 11 p.m. and over 24 inches in the previous 48 hours. More rain is forecast.
More than 1000 people from 300 locations were rescued on Sunday in the area. Hundreds of homes are reported flooded. Several businesses are damaged. A 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is in effect until further notice.
At this time, we are still requesting that residents stay in their homes if they can do so safely or remain at the locations they have evacuated to. Based on current weather conditions, we anticipate that residents may be able to safely return home on Thursday, Aug. 31. However, the return date is contingent upon rapidly changing weather conditions. Please continue to monitor the local news, the City’s website and reports from the National Weather Service.
As a reminder, do not call 911 to report water in streets and channels, unless there is a threat to personal welfare.
Multiple roads are closed due the water levels at the creeks.
There are four shelters operating: Wedgwood Elementary School (600 people), Calvary Houston Church (200 people), Friendswood High School (200 people), and the Friendswood Activity Building (80 people). The Red Cross is considering opening a shelter at Landolt Elementary School. Hospitals are not accessible.
- City facilities will continue to be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and resident services usually available at City facilities will not be available.
- All City employees who are identified as essential personnel are expected to report to work. Employees should contact their immediate supervisor for report times and make plans for their homes and families.
- The City Council Meeting scheduled for Monday, Aug. 28 has been cancelled. The reschedule date, contingent upon weather, is Aug. 30.
