Texas House Bill 2694 – Credit by Exam & Kindergarten Acceleration
The Texas Legislature recently made changes to the Credit by Exam and Kindergarten Acceleration requirements. Specifically, students are now required to score in the 80th percentile instead of the 90th percentile. The information below will continue to be updated as the Pearland ISD Board of Trustees modifies Board Policy to reflect these changes.
Provision of the Texas Education Code (28.023) and Texas Administrative Code 74.24 are implemented by Pearland Independent School District by providing the following:
A student in grades 1 – 5 may advance one grade level on the basis of a Board approved examination for acceleration if:
- the student scores 80 percent or above on each of the four course tests (math, reading, science and social studies) administered per grade level;
-
a district representative recommends that the student be advanced; and
-
the student’s parent or guardian gives written approval of the advancement
A student in grades 6 – 12 may receive credit for a subject if the student scores in the 80 percent or above on an examination for that subject. A student attempting acceleration for grades 6 – 12 must score at least 80 percent for a one-semester course or 80 percent on each semester for a two-semester course.
Please note the following information:
- Only students that are currently enrolled in Pearland ISD are eligible to test.
- The application form below must be submitted to your child’s school counselor before 3:00 p.m. on fourth Friday in April for the June session or second Friday in May for the July Session.
- Elementary CBE Application
- Middle School CBE Application
- Junior High CBE Application
- High School CBE Application
The testing will occur the second week in June or the first week in July. Confirmations will be returned to the enrolled student in May for the June tests and in June for the July tests.
- Testing for all examinations will be held in Pearland ISD.
- Check-in for testing will be 8:00 a.m. – 8:15 a.m. for the morning session and 12:45 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. for the afternoon session. Late arrivals (up to thirty minutes) will be admitted but must sign a waiver agreeing to a shortened total time for testing.
- Lunch will be on your own.
- Students in grades 1-12 CBE exams need to bring two #2 pencils, paper, a black pen and a calculator for some math tests. Some tests require that work be done ahead of time and turned in at the test. It is the student’s responsibility to check on the University of Texas CBE Study Guide to determine the materials required for each exam.
- Students who register for credit by exams without prior instruction will pay a $20 deposit for each test requested. Place the deposit in an envelope (with the student’s name and school on the front) and attach it to the registration form. Personal checks made to Pearland ISD are preferred for the deposit. Upon verification that the child has taken a credit by exam, the $20 deposit per test will be refunded to the student/parent.
