Waste Management, Inc. Contract Extended
The City of Pearland has reached an agreement with Waste Management, Inc. to continue to provide commercial and residential garbage services and expand residential recycling collection through 2021. The additional five-year agreement would deploy recycling carts citywide and streamline commercial customers billing. This is in line with the City’s commitment to maximize recycling opportunities for its residents through curbside recycling programs.
Residential Recycling program expanded
Residents can expect to see an improvement as a result of this contractual extension. Because of the success of a cart recycling pilot program held earlier this year, Pearland residents will receive a 96-gallon wheeled recycling cart. The pilot program, which consisted of approximately 3000 homes showed that residents increased their recycling which reduced the amount of waste sent to the landfill. Additionally, residents who participated in the program preferred to have 96-gallon wheeled carts, with a service frequency of one time per week and supported an increased cost for the expanded service.
Waste Management, Inc. will begin delivering the carts to homes early 2014 with the goal that all homes would have the cart by April 1, 2014. Residents can begin using the cart as soon as it is delivered. For the enhanced recycling services, homeowners will see a modest increase of $1.67 per month to their utility and/or garbage bill. Each home will receive one cart, which will be serviced once a week. Each week, residents should place the carts at curbside by 6 p.m. in the evening before or by 7 a.m. in the morning of their designated recycle pickup day.
