Talented Teens Tackle Gripping Drama: “Anne Frank and Me”
Anne Frank and Me is the first drama of the season at the Pearl Theater. The show runs September 27 – October 13, 2013.
The story centers on Nicole Burns, a modern teen who doubts the truth and cares even less about the Holocaust, but ultimately comes face-to-face with its hell, and—in an extraordinary sequence—meets Anne Frank on a cattle car to Auschwitz.
Anne Frank and Me offers a tremendous opportunity for actors to work on complex and meaty roles. The cast ranges in age from 11 and up. “Before casting the younger actors, I spoke to their parents about the emotional weight of the play and subject matter. Each expressed how important they felt the play was and wanted their children to be a part of such a significant piece,” says director Renee van Nifterik.
We start out with Nicole in today’s teen world of MTV. Hip-hop dancing, unfinished homework assignments, and young love and are then transported with her to into the dangerous world of Nazi-occupied Paris, 1942-44, where her family and friends are forced into hiding for two years living on the edge of discovery and death. At the conclusion of the play, we are then are brought forward again to the light and hope of the present and the awakening of a young girl.
Anne Frank and Me is taken from a 2001 novel by Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesveld, with Bennett subsequently adapting to story for the stage.
