Summer is finally here! Welcome the summer season by heading outdoors…or indoors at any one of our Parks & Recreation facilities! In this month’s Rec Report, we’re sharing a variety of camps, programs and events that will keep your summer full of action, fitness and awareness of the Great Outdoors! Spanish-Language Adventure Camp is a Unique Experience!Looking for that extraordinary summer experience for your children? Join Futura this summer for Spanish Adventures camps! Futura Adventure Camps allow students the chance to live another language through the combination of language instruction, culture lessons, traditional games, music, dance and Spanish-influenced art. Each week of camp is independent and no prior knowledge of foreign language is needed. Futura camps are open to children ages 3 to 12 and are available at the Pearland Community Center and the Westside Event Center. Programs start in early June and run through late August. Kids Rule at Our Summer Camps!!!
We’re excited to host our Camp KIA and Camp Mahalo at the Recreation Center & Natatorium this summer. Through our camps, we are able to offer quality education youth programs for 6 to 13 year-olds in our community and help them create stories for them to tell for years to come.
With the RCN hosting camp this summer, we will see an increased number of camp participants throughout the halls, so please keep this in mind as you continue with your plans to be active and healthy this summer.

Poolside Summer Safety With Our Learn To Swim Program
Whether it is in salt water or fresh water, knowing how to swim is an important part of family summer vacations to that special beach spot or local swimming pool. Stop by to check out the City of Pearland Learn To Swim (LTS) Program All swimming lessons are led by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. We offer classes for all ages including Parent/Child (9 months to 3 years), preschool classes (4 to 5 years) and Learn To Swim Levels 1-6 for children 6 years and older. In addition, there are lessons geared specifically for adults. If you would like to work on more specific skills within our LTS program, you are encouraged to sign up for private lessons. New Classes at Westside Event Center
The Westside Event Center is offering new classes for Summer 2013. If you’re looking for something to do together as a family, try our new Fit and Fabulous Family exercise class. Do you need to squeeze in a quick workout during your lunch break? Come try our Express Muscle Work class. Does your child love learning about dinosaurs and dragons? Register them today for specialty classes about those amazing creatures at the Westside Event Center! We also have Cool Kid Fitness, Hip Hop, Jazz and a variety of other classes for youth and adults. X-Treme Heat Summer Girls Basketball Camp
The X-Treme Heat Girls Basketball Camp is dedicated to providing opportunities to help develop and enhance the skills of the average female player. Participation in the camp will improve the mental and physical skills of all participants. X-Treme Heat Sports seeks to assist young athletes who aspire to take their athletic abilities to the next level. The program cost is $100 per child, ages 5 to 18 years. “Think Outside” During Park and Recreation Month in July!
Next month, help Pearland Parks & Recreation celebrate national Park and Recreation Month by sharing your outdoor experiences with us all month long! In July, check in with us at Parks & Recreation facilities, pick up a “Think Outside” calendar and participate in 31 days of events, programs and fun, including a contest for prizes that will have you out in our parks, searching with your smartphone and sending us pictures of your outdoor action! You can also look for our signature “Think Outside” icon (pictured at left) in the Summer edition of our “A Time for Leisure” program guide for tips about parks, recreation and the benefits that outdoor activity provides for you and your family! Celebration of Freedom – Stars, Stripes, Fireworks & Fun!
Join us in celebrating our country’s independence on Thursday, July 4, during the City’s annual Celebration of Freedom. The event takes place at Pearland High School Football Stadium, located at 3775 South Main. Stadium and field seating will be available at no charge beginning at 6 p.m. A VFW military salute will begin the evening’s entertainment, followed by the National Anthem. Then, sit back and relax and sing along to the sounds of the Texas Unlimited Band on the HEB Plus! Entertainment Stage.At sundown, enjoy a spectacular 20-minute fireworks display from your seat inside the stadium. Food is available for purchase, or you can bring along your own. Please note that alcohol, glass containers, pets and tobacco are prohibited. Activities on-site will include face painting, inflatables and strolling entertainment. Rockets Summer Basketball Camp
The Houston Rockets and The National Basketball Academy have teamed up to offer a summer basketball camp designed for boys and girls who are looking to improve their basketball skills. Throughout the camp. participants will receive personal instruction in all areas of the game, including dribbling, shooting, passing, blocking and defense, while learning lesson such as good sportsmanship and the “team” concept. Players will be grouped by age and/or skill level when possible. Boys and girls ages 5 to 16 can sign up now for this five-day clinic, which will be held July 15 to 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Pearland Recreation Center & Natatorium.
